Barham is a village of two parts - Barham itself and Derringstone which lays to the south. It is located in and surrounded by a "Special Landscape Area" known as the North Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is a settlement where new buildings will be required to conform to a number of limitations on development, design and habitat protection. The Canterbury Local Plan determines that new housing will not be allowed unless it is within the built in the confines of the village, of minor development nature and conforming to strict design and materials constraints.
